Key Highlights:

  • Ola unveiled plans to deploy a staggering 10,000 electric two-wheelers
  • The cities where the E2W will be deployed are Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bangalore
  • E-bike taxi charges- Rs 25 for 5 kilometres, Rs 50 for 10 kilometres and Rs 75 for 15 kilometres

In a bold move towards sustainable urban mobility, Ola, one of India's leading ride-hailing companies, has unveiled plans to deploy a staggering 10,000 electric two-wheelers (EV 2Ws) across three major cities within the next two months. This initiative marks a significant step forward in Ola's commitment to electrification and its vision of serving 1 billion Indians with affordable and eco-friendly transportation options.

Bangalore Pilot Project

The decision comes on the heels of a successful pilot project for e-bike services launched in Bangalore back in September 2023. With this latest expansion, Ola aims to solidify its position as a pioneer in the electric vehicle space, intending to have the largest EV 2W fleet in the country by the end of the year.

"In line with the company's vision and growth strategy of serving 1 billion Indians and nationwide penetration with electrification, Ola plans to deploy 10,000 e-vehicles over the next 2 months across these (Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bangalore) cities," the company stated in a press release.

Service Charges

The e-bike service, which proved to be a hit during its trial phase, offers pricing starting at Rs 25 for 5 kilometres, making it an affordable option for urban commuters. With rates of Rs 50 for 10 kilometres and Rs 75 for 15 kilometres, Ola aims to provide a sustainable and convenient solution for short-distance travel within cities.

Vision and Strategy

Hemant Bakshi, CEO of Ola Mobility, emphasised the significance of electrification in driving affordability within the mobility sector. "Electrification is the biggest lever to unlock affordability in the mobility space. At Ola, driving affordable mobility through electrification is our priority and in line with our vision to serve 1 billion Indians," said Bakshi.

He further added, "Following the massive success of our Bangalore e-bike taxi pilot, we have proven its sustainable value proposition for all ecosystem participants - the consumer (lower price), the driver (higher earnings), and Ola (new category and revenues), and now look at mass developments across Bangalore, Delhi, and Hyderabad and build a larger market for e-Bike taxi in India."

Ola's e-bike service not only offers benefits to consumers and drivers but also presents an opportunity for gig-economy workers on the Ola platform, furthering the company's commitment to innovation and accessibility in the transportation sector.

Rides and Charging Infrastructure

With over 1.75 million rides already achieved and 200 charging stations set up in Bangalore to support the growing e-bike fleet, Ola's expansion plans signify a significant milestone in India's transition towards sustainable urban mobility. The company's growth strategy, spanning across ride-hailing, financial services, logistics, and e-commerce, underscores its commitment to shaping the future of transportation in India.

Verdict

As Ola gears up to roll out its electric two-wheelers in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bangalore, the stage is set for a transformative shift towards greener and more efficient urban commuting options, paving the way for a sustainable future for generations to come.
