► A throwback competitor to the Honda E?
Renault has confirmed the manufacturing of the retro-futuristic 5 EV, which will be built in Northern France. According to the company, the new 5 EV will be one of ten battery-electric vehicles available by 2025.
The new Renault 5 EV will use a battery-electric variant of Renault's CMF-B chassis (found in the Renault Clio and Captur, as well as the Nissan Juke), dubbed CMF-BEV, with a range of roughly 248 miles. It's a scaled-down version of the CMF-EV architecture that underpins the new Nissan Ariya, the future Renault MeganE (due in 2022), and Alpine's new all-electric lineup.
This declaration came as part of Renault's online 'ElectroPop' event, when it revealed its goal of making 90 percent of its European sales totally electric.
Renault 5 EV prototype- Story Behind it!!
Former PSA design czar Gilles Vidal has joined Renault, and his design team has drawn inspiration from the historic Renault 5 hatchback, but has not simply recreated it. The new 5 concept, like Honda's E and Fiat's 500e, has been modernized and electrified.
"The Renault 5 Prototype's design is based on the R5, a cult car from our past,' said Vidal, Renault's new design director. 'This prototype simply defines modernity, a car of its time: urban, electric, and appealing."
The new prototype, like the first, is an angular city car with selected yellow headlights for a very French throwback flair, but this time it's an EV. The prototype retains the original's bonnet intake, but it now conceals a charging hatch. The original's fog lights are retained, although they are now daytime running lights.
And, like practically every other electric vehicle we've seen recently, the badges light up.
