Skoda Auto India starts mass production of the Kylaq subcompact SUV, promising modern design, advanced features, and exceptional performance. Learn more about its journey to Indian roads.

Skoda Auto India has announced the commencement of mass production for its all-new subcompact SUV, the Kylaq. This milestone marks Skoda’s re-entry into the subcompact segment after a prolonged absence and signifies the brand’s debut in the fiercely competitive sub-4-meter SUV market. The Kylaq is being manufactured at the Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd plant in Chakan, Pune, alongside the brand’s other India 2.0 siblings.

Skoda Auto India Commences Mass Production of Kylaq Subcompact SUV

Designed for India, Made in India

Commenting on the production milestone, Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India, stated, “We’re thrilled to begin production of Škoda Auto India’s first sub-4-meter SUV. Congratulations to the entire team on the successful start of production. Kylaq is engineered and developed in India to cater to the evolving requirements of Indian customers. By manufacturing Kylaq locally, we proudly support the Make-in-India initiative, maintaining the Group's DNA of delivering safety, comfort, and driving dynamics.”

The Kylaq has been developed to address the specific needs of the Indian market. Its compact proportions, advanced features, and robust engineering aim to carve out a niche for Skoda in a segment currently dominated by homegrown and international rivals.

Boosted Production Capacity

In anticipation of strong demand for the Kylaq, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India has expanded the production capacity at its Chakan facility by 30%. The plant now has an annual output capacity of 2,55,000 units, cementing its status as a central hub for the brand's production activities in the region.

This expansion comes as part of a larger investment plan, with the company pledging ₹15,000 crore in September 2024. These funds will bolster Skoda’s production capabilities at the facility and facilitate the development of future models, including internal combustion and all-electric vehicles.

Strong Demand Already Building

Skoda Auto India revealed that it has already received over 10,000 bookings for the Kylaq, signaling strong early interest in the SUV. Deliveries are expected to commence late next month. The initial response places the Kylaq as a potential game-changer for Skoda’s foothold in the subcompact SUV market, a space that has seen exponential growth over recent years due to its appeal among urban and semi-urban buyers.

Key Step in India 2.0 Strategy

The Kylaq is the latest addition to Skoda’s India 2.0 initiative, an aggressive growth strategy tailored for the Indian market. The SUV shares its underpinnings with the heavily localized MQB A0-IN platform, ensuring high levels of cost efficiency without compromising on the premium build quality Skoda is renowned for globally.

This move underscores Skoda Auto’s commitment to serving the evolving needs of Indian consumers while supporting the government’s ‘Make-in-India’ vision.

Looking Ahead

With a fresh contender in the subcompact SUV space, Skoda looks poised to make an impact on one of India’s fastest-growing automotive segments. Backed by localized production, robust investments, and an already enthusiastic customer response, the Kylaq could redefine the brand’s success story in India.

The Kylaq’s launch comes at a time when subcompact SUVs are becoming increasingly popular, offering a versatile blend of practicality, affordability, and style. With bookings already crossing 10,000 units, the road ahead looks promising for Skoda’s newest entrant.
