Suzuki’s DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM debut with a powerful 398cc engine. Learn about their key features, differences, and potential for the Indian market.

Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM introduced New 398cc Engine

Suzuki has introduced two thrilling models with the new 398cc single-cylinder engine: the DR-Z4SM supermoto and the DR-Z4S road-going dirt bike. It comes with 38 horsepower and 37 Nm of torque and it is better than the engines found in KTM and Triumph small-displacement models.

Transmission and Engine

For more seamless gear changes, the 398cc engine is mated to a 5-speed gearbox and a slipper clutch. The twin-spar frame of the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM, which incorporates an aluminium swingarm and subframe, guarantees a sturdy and lightweight chassis.

Shared Features

Three Riding Modes: The A (sharpest), B (balanced), and C (softest) riding modes are available on both versions.

  • Traction Control
  • Dual-channel ABS that can be turned on and off to accommodate different riding situations is known as switchable ABS.
  • Gravel Mode

Key Differences Between DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM

Suspension and Brakes

The DR-Z4S is fitted with suspension travel of 280mm (front) and 296mm (rear), while the DR-Z4SM features slightly shorter travel with 260mm at the front and 277mm at the rear.
The DR-Z4SM boasts a larger 310mm front brake disc, whereas the DR-Z4S comes with a 270mm disc.

Wheels and Tyres

  • The DR-Z4SM is equipped with 17-inch tubeless spoked wheels wrapped in Dunlop tyres (120/70 R17 front, 140/70 R17 rear) for better grip on paved roads.
  • The DR-Z4S sports 21-inch (front) and 18-inch (rear) dual-purpose tyres sized 80/100-21 and 120/80-18 respectively, designed for off-road performance.

Seat Height and Weight

The DR-Z4SM has a seat height of 890mm and weighs 154 kg with a full 8.7-litre tank. The DR-Z4S, on the other hand, has an even taller seat at 920mm but is lighter at 151 kg.

Positioning in the Indian Market

Currently, Suzuki’s Indian lineup includes smaller models such as three 125cc scooters, two 150cc motorcycles, and three 250cc bikes, all manufactured locally. The company’s big bike offerings include the GSX-8R, V-Strom 800DE, Katana, and the Hayabusa. The DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM, with their 400cc engines, would fill a strategic gap in Suzuki’s portfolio if introduced in India.
