Suzuki has issued a recall for the Fronx compact SUV in Japan, citing a brake caliper issue that could affect safety. Learn about the affected units, potential risks, and Suzuki’s corrective measures.

Suzuki Motor Corporation has issued a recall for the Fronx in Japan due to a critical issue with the rear brake caliper mounting bolts. The recall, filed with Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, affects 1,911 units manufactured between September 13 and November 8, 2024.

Suzuki Fronx Recalled in Japan Over Brake Caliper Issue

The Problem

The recall stems from improper tightening of the rear brake caliper mounting bolts during assembly. Due to insufficient torque, these bolts may loosen over time, which could lead to:

  • Abnormal noises during braking or while driving on uneven surfaces.
  • In severe cases, detachment of the bolt, resulting in reduced braking effectiveness.
Suzuki has emphasized the need for an immediate inspection of all affected vehicles.
  • Bolts found with inadequate tightening torque will be replaced and secured to the manufacturer’s specified torque value to ensure optimal safety.

Suzuki Fronx: A Popular Crossover Facing a Hurdle

The Suzuki Fronx, launched in April 2023, has been a runaway success, with over 200,000 units sold globally. A Baleno-derived crossover, the Fronx has captured attention not only in its domestic market but also internationally, including in India.

In India, the Fronx has emerged as a favorite among buyers in major markets such as Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kochi, and Bengaluru. It is the only model in Maruti Suzuki’s lineup to feature a turbocharged petrol engine, further boosting its appeal.

India-Spec Fronx: Powertrains and Variants

The Fronx is available in six variants: Sigma, Delta, Delta+, Delta+ (O), Zeta, and Alpha, with prices ranging from ₹7.52 lakh to ₹13.04 lakh (ex-showroom). The crossover is offered with three powertrain options:

1. 1.0L Turbocharged Petrol Engine

  • Output: 99 bhp at 5,500 rpm, 147 Nm at 2,000-4,500 rpm.
  • Transmission: 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

2. 1.2L Naturally Aspirated Petrol Engine

  • Output: 89 bhp at 6,000 rpm, 113 Nm at 4,400 rpm.
  • Transmission: 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT.

3. 1.2L Petrol-CNG Engine (available in Sigma and Delta trims only)

  • Prioritizes efficiency for eco-conscious buyers.

What’s Next for Affected Owners?

Suzuki will notify all affected owners, and inspections will be carried out free of charge. The recall underscores Suzuki’s commitment to safety and its proactive approach to addressing manufacturing issues.

Conclusion

While the recall in Japan poses a minor setback, the Suzuki Fronx remains a strong contender in the compact crossover segment. Its versatile engine options, appealing design, and competitive pricing continue to make it a popular choice globally, including in the Indian market.
