Tata Considering the Possible Return of Tata Nano as an EV: Report

Highlights

  1. Tata Motors currently leads the Passenger EV car segment in India.
  2. Rumors are that Tata is planning to relaunch Nano as an EV.
  3. Tata Nano was phased out of production in May 2018.

Tata Nano Might Return As an EV

Tata Motors discontinued the Nano small car and Safari Storme SUV in the country with the implementation of BS6 emission standards in April 2020. The Tata Nano, marketed as the world's cheapest car, failed to generate volume for the country's carmaker. The vehicle was phased out of production in May 2018. The small hatchback was equipped with a 624cc twin-cylinder petrol engine producing 38bhp and 51Nm. Power was routed to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual or an AMT gearbox.

According to a recent media report, the domestic automaker may consider reintroducing the Tata Nano with an electric powertrain. The underpinning, suspension setup, and tyres of the Tata Nano EV are likely to undergo significant changes. According to the report, if the Tata Nano EV plan moves forward, the carmaker may resume talks with the Tamil Nadu government about acquiring the Ford facility in Maraimalainagar. It should be noted that there has been no official word on the Tata Nano electric car.

Tata Considering the Possible Return of Tata Nano as an EV: Report

In India, the company currently sells three EVs: The Tigor EV, the Xpres-T, and the Nexon EV. Tata recently announced Tiago EV pricing, which starts at Rs 8.49 lakh and goes up to Rs 11.79 lakh. The electric hatchback will go on sale in January 2023. The Tata Tiago EV is available with two lithium-ion battery packs: 19.2kWh and 24kWh, with ranges of 250km and 315km (MIDC) respectively.

Tata's Ziptron high-voltage technology is used in the electric hatch, which consists of a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor producing 61bhp/110Nm with the smaller battery pack and 74bhp/114Nm with the larger battery pack. There are three charging options for the Tiago EV: 50kW DC fast charger (80% in 57 minutes), 7.2kW AC fast charger (2 hours 35 minutes - 19.2kWh and 3 hours 35 minutes - 24kWh), and 3.3kW home charger (100% in 5 hours 5 minutes - 19.2kWh battery/ 6 hours 20 minutes - 24kWh battery).
