Hyundai lost it's top spot in best selling car models in India, Maruti bounced back with Brezza and Ertiga and took both first and second spot from Creta and Punch.
One of the biggest highlights of August 2024 sales figures is that Hyundai Creta lost its top spot within a month and Tata Punch lost its second spot. Both of them came 3rd and 5th because the Maruti Brezza and Ertiga took first and second place respectively.
In the Indian automotive market sales are mainly driven by SUVs and MUVs where 10 out 6 cars are SUV/MUV/Crossovers. Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the overall market, with its models occupying top spots in both SUVs and hatchbacks.

Maruti Suzuki captured its leading position with the Brezza selling 19,190 units, marking a 32% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth. The Ertiga also showed a robust performance in the MUV segment with a 51% Y-o-Y increase, selling 18,580 units. Despite the SUV segment growing stronger, Wagon R remained a steady seller with 16,450 units, though its growth slowed to just 6% Y-o-Y.
Hyundai also had a notable presence with the Creta SUV at 16,762 units, growing by 21% compared to last year, while its other popular SUV, the Venue, saw a decline of 17%, moving 9,085 units.
Tata showcased its strength in the SUV market, with Punch recording 15,643 sales, reflecting an 8% Y-o-Y growth. The Nexon, another SUV from Tata, showed an impressive 53% growth, selling 12,289 units.
Mahindra capitalised on the growing demand for rugged SUVs, with Scorpio experiencing a 39% rise and selling 13,787 units. The XUV 700 saw a 38% growth, while the XUV 300 recorded a remarkable 80% increase in sales, indicating strong consumer demand for Mahindra's SUV range.
Kia showed stellar growth, with its compact SUV, Sonet, seeing a 144% jump in sales at 10,073 units, while the Seltos struggled, witnessing a 39% decline with 6,536 units sold.
Toyota's Innova + Hycross in the MUV segment displayed steady performance, selling 9,687 units, up by 12% Y-o-Y.

SUVs dominated the market with multiple models showing double-digit growth. Brezza, Creta, Punch, Scorpio, and XUV 700 led the segment, while newer entries like the Kia Sonet and Toyota Hyryder showed rapid growth. SUVs contributed heavily to the overall sales figures, with even new launches like Exter from Hyundai recording decent sales despite a slight drop.
Hatchbacks, traditionally popular in India, showed mixed results. Maruti's Swift and Baleno saw a sharp decline of 31% and 33%, respectively, reflecting a possible shift in consumer preference towards SUVs. The Wagon R maintained a solid presence with 16,450 units, while Alto faced an 11% decline.
MUVs saw growth, with Ertiga and Carens from Kia registering positive trends. The Toyota Innova + Hycross maintained its position as a strong performer in the MUV space.
Maruti Suzuki led the market with a balanced portfolio of SUVs, hatchbacks, and sedans. Despite some decline in hatchbacks like Swift and Baleno, its SUVs like Brezza and Fronx helped sustain growth. The company's dominance was further cemented by the success of Ertiga in the MUV segment.
Hyundai had a solid SUV lineup with Creta and Venue, but its hatchback, the Grand i10, saw a 27% decline in sales. Despite this, Hyundai's SUV strategy continues to drive its overall sales growth.
Mahindra focused heavily on SUVs, with its top-selling models like Scorpio and XUV 700 delivering solid results. Mahindra's focus on rugged, adventure-oriented SUVs resonated well with the market, evident from the massive 80% growth of the XUV 300.
Kia displayed rapid growth in the SUV market, particularly with the Sonet, which outpaced competitors with a 144% increase in sales. Its MUV Carens also saw a 35% rise in sales.

August 2024 showcased a market leaning heavily towards SUVs, with most brands focusing on expanding their SUV portfolio. While hatchbacks remain significant, their growth has slowed, with consumer interest shifting toward compact and mid-size SUVs. Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Mahindra continue to dominate the sales charts, while Kia is quickly gaining ground with its aggressive SUV lineup.
