The festive season failed to bring joy for the OEMs with car sales in November 2021 at 2,45,217 units against 2,86,236 units in November 2020 registering YOY de-growth of 14.3%, the main reason for this is the ongoing global semi-conductor chip shortage which has forced the OEMs to reduce production and launches of new cars. Car sales even registered negative MOM sales as in October 2021 2,60,162 units were sold thus showing decrease of 5.74%.
Here are the top 10 OEMs in November 2021:
Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car maker remained top by a huge margin despite a decrease in sales from the corresponding year when 1,35,775 units were sold in November 2020 as compared to 1,09,726 units this year, showing decreasing YOY sales of 19.19%. MOM sales increased by 0.67% 1,09,726 units sold last month against 1,08,991 units in October 2021. Maruti Suzuki cars still commands a market share of 45% and is way ahead of its nearest rival and it may increase with the launch of the all new Celerio and the host of new car launches planned by the company in the coming months.
Hyundai came second this month with 15% market share even though it registered decline in car sales last month. Hyundai India just sold 37,001 units last month against sales of 48,800 units in November 2020, registering YOY de-growth of 24.18%. MOM sales were near identical with the difference between October 2021 sales and November 2021 sales being just 20 cars.
Tata Motors was buoyed by a positive response to the recent launch of Punch micro-SUV and posted positive YOY growth of 37.60% with car sales in November 2021 at 29,778 more then sales in November 2020 at 21,641. MOM sales decreased by 12.22% with the company selling 33,925 units in October 2021 against the 29,778 units sold last month and the company holds 12% of the domestic car market share.
• Mahindra
Mahindra is witnessing a huge demand for its new cars with the Thar and the all new XUV 700 both commanding waiting periods of more than 6 months with some models of XUV 700 commanding waiting periods of more then 1-year. This showed in the YOY sales of the company with a positive growth of 8.27% over the corresponding month of last year with sales stood at 19,458 against 17,971. MOM sales registering a marginal 3% de-growth when 20,130 units were sold in October 2021 against November 2021 and continues to hold onto nearly 8% market share.
• Kia
Kia India is readying itself for the launch of its new MPV the Kia Carens and it looks like it can help Kia India in terms of car sales as it registered a de-growth of 32.39% in YOY car sales for last month where it sold 14,214 units against 21,022 units sold in November 2020. The MOM sales too witnessed a drop of 13% as they sold 16,331 units in October 2021, 2,117 units more than last month. The market share of Kia India in the Indian car market declined from 6% to 5.8%.
• Toyota
Toyota is readying the Belta sedan for the Indian car market which is a re-badged version of the Maruti Ciaz and it looks like this strategy and partnership with Maruti Suzuki is working as it registered a positive growth of 52% in YOY car sales last month when it sold 13,003 units as compared to just 8,508 units in November 2020. MOM sales too increased by 4.53% from October 2021 when it sold 12,440 units. Toyota increased its car market share from 4.7% to 5.3%.

Volkswagen witnessed a huge jump of 112% in its YOY car sales as it sold 3,000 units in November 2021 against 1,412 units in November 2020. This jump was due to the good response that its new SUV, the VW Taigun has generated but the MOM sales were down by 77 units from October 2021.
• Nissan
The Nissan Magnite continues to garner good response with over 30,000 bookings since its launch.
