The 2021 Volkswagen Taigun will hit Indian roads soon as the company plans to start accepting bookings in mid-August or early September.
● The Volkswagen Taigun is the next much-awaited launch under VW Group’s India 2.0 strategy following the Skoda Kushaq.● While the Indian launch could happen in September, the carmaker plans to open bookings by the middle of August 2021.● The VW Taigun, a Skoda Kushaq sibling, will be available with two petrol engine options.
Volkswagen Taigun – The Features
There will be a similarity between the Skoda Kushaq and the Volkswagen Taigun because of the similar platform they are based on. While the doors, roof, and window contours could be identical, the VW Taigun has a unique appeal. The single-piece headlights on the front fascia with two slat chrome grilles and chrome inserts on the bumper characterize the Taigun and separates it from the rest of the pack. The tail-lights are different, with its cluster running across the entire width of the tailgate. The generous chrome garnishing on the bumpers adds to its personality.
The switchgear system could be the same as that available on the Kushaq, but the integrated infotainment screen in the dashboard lends a minimalistic appearance. In addition, the dashboard trims will have their identity to distinguish them from the Kushaq.
The Volkswagen Taigun top-end variants will come equipped with a high-quality infotainment system comprising a 10-inch touchscreen facility with iOS and Android connectivity. The My Volkswagen Connect app is a unique feature, and so are the automatic climate control, wireless charging pads, USB Type-C ports, etc. However, the Taigun gets a better digital instrument cluster than the Kushaq. In addition, the Taigun comes equipped with six airbags as a standard offering across all variants. Other security features include a tyre pressure-cum-deflation warning system and the ISOFIX child seat anchors.
Volkswagen Taigun – Under the Hood
Two TSI turbo-petrol engine options are available on the Taigun. The smaller engine has a 1.0L displacement capable of delivering 115hp power and 175Nm torque. The larger 1.5L 4-cylinder engine could produce 150hp and 250Nm, power, and torque, respectively. The standard offering will be a 6-speed manual gearbox. However, for the auto transmission variants, the 1.0L TSI engine comes with a 6-speed torque converter, and the 1.5L engine pairs with a 7-speed DCT automatic. The powertrains are similar to that available on the Kushaq.
Volkswagen Taigun – Heats the competition
The mid-size Volkswagen Taigun has the likes of Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, and the Nissan Kicks as its primary competitors, besides its sister model, the Skoda Kushaq. While being smaller than the Seltos or the Creta, the Taigun will feature the most extended wheelbase in the segment. Volkswagen has not announced the pricing yet, but one expects it to be around Rs 10.50 lakhs to Rs 17 lakhs, similar to the Skoda Kushaq.
