Volkswagen's PEAK EV project in India aims for mainstream E-SUVs by 2026, showcasing a strategic shift towards electric mobility.
Volkswagen Group, valued at 272.9 billion euros, has set its sights on India's electric vehicle market with the launch of the PEAK EV project. This initiative, aimed at localizing the electric vehicle production, is set to introduce multiple SUVs under the Volkswagen and Skoda brands by 2026.
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India has chosen to go solo in developing the Born EV platform, a move away from the earlier discussions with Mahindra & Mahindra for joint development. This platform is set to become the backbone for several SUVs under the Volkswagen and Skoda banners in India.
The adaptation of the MEB21G architecture in India signals the production of a lineup of SUVs, primarily targeting the entry and midsize segments. With potential export prospects, this move underlines Volkswagen's commitment to the growing Indian electric vehicle market.
Volkswagen, traditionally known for its internal combustion engine vehicles in India, is making a significant shift with the production of its first SUV EV. The aim is to roll out 50,000 units for both domestic and international markets, marking a crucial milestone in the brand's electric vehicle strategy.
Skoda Auto Volkswagen's upcoming small SUV, positioned below the Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun, will exclusively feature the Skoda brand. This strategic move allows Volkswagen to tap into the early stages of India's small SUV market.
Piyush Arora, MD and CEO of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, emphasizes the strategic importance of India in the Volkswagen Group's growth plans. With a vision to introduce the electric vehicles from various brands, the company aims to offer both fully built-up units and locally manufactured models, covering a range of ICE and BEV options.
